ABSTRACT:
Pickleball noise is repetitive, impulsive noise and is creating conflicts in hundreds of communities across North America. This study links chronic exposure to pickleball noise to self-reported adverse health effects in nearby residents. In addition to somewhat expected problems like sleeplessness, anxiety, and heart symptoms, neighbors are also reporting hearing phantom pickleball pops---and even PTSD-like symptoms and suicidal thoughts.
Comprehensive sound studies that include both the acoustic and human factors are recommended along with increased setbacks between homes and courts. Research is urgently needed to further study the complex acoustical properties of pickleball noise, the effectiveness of various noise mitigation strategies, and the health impacts of prolonged impulse noise in residential settings.
