ABSTRACT:
This study explored the prevalence and impact of Type III Workplace Violence (WPV), as defined by NIOSH. Specific to healthcare, Type III WPV encompasses nurse-to-nurse incivility, otherwise known as Lateral Violence (LV). Prevalence of LV was demonstrated to be as high as 75% or more, with 75% of those affected by LV experiencing negative physical and psychological effects—up to 10% experienced PTSD symptoms. Factors contributing to Type III WPV, such as bystander impact, were explored, as well as the effectiveness of training programs at the graduate and undergraduate level. The articles analyzed included suggestions to nurse leaders, nurses in academic institutions, experienced nurses, new graduate nurses, and students. Suggestions included a culture of zero tolerance, early education regarding recognizing and responding to WPV, simulations and role-play, and efforts to increase Emotional Intelligence.
