Building an Affordable Electronic Health Record System: A Cost-Effective Approach

ABSTRACT:
Evidence-based practice highlights the importance of incorporating Electronic Health Records (EHR), including electronic Medication Administration Records (MAR), into nursing education. The skill of scanning medications prior to administration is essential for nursing students’ future careers, but the cost of EHR programs with annual subscriptions can be prohibitive. To provide a cost-effective solution for nursing students at Campbellsville University, the Simulation Coordinator developed an EHR system using Excel and Avery. This system was tested with second-semester nursing students during a simulation exercise. The trial aimed to assess the system’s efficiency and the enhanced realism it brought to the simulation. Outcome measures were gathered through surveys administered immediately after the simulation. Sixteen second-semester students took part in the trial and completed the survey. The survey results revealed that all sixteen students felt the electronic MAR system significantly helped them prepare for clinical practice and enhanced their confidence in using EHR for patient documentation.
